'Medical city' to move off drawing board

There will be plenty of talk in 2008 when it comes to Lake Nona's "medical city," though the major talking points won't start opening for business until 2009.

Construction has already begun on the University of Central Florida's College of Medicine and its Burnett College of Biomedical Sciences, as well as the Burnham Institute for Medical Research -- three of the top tenants for what is envisioned as the future hub for a burgeoning biomedical cluster in Central Florida.

All three facilities are scheduled to open in the latter half of 2009. UCF hopes to eventually add a school of nursing at the site in southeastern Orlando, though that would be years down the road.

The same goes for the cancer-research institute that will likely be run jointly by M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando and UCF. The research institute will initially be housed in the Burnett building's fifth floor but will move into its own quarters a few years later.

Another major tenant for the Lake Nona campus was signed and all but sealed last month: A long-awaited VA hospital will see some site preparation this year, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. But construction won't begin until 2009 at the earliest on the 134-bed hospital and outpatient clinic, with an expected opening date of 2012.

That's the same year the Nemours Foundation of Jacksonville hopes to open its children's hospital, though it will be near rather than in Lake Nona. The hospital was headed for Lake Nona at one point, but negotiations between Nemours and the Tavistock Group, Lake Nona's owner, were unsuccessful. Nemours announced last month it had instead signed a contract for 118 acres on Boggy Creek Road, about 2 miles away.
